Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Public Beta): Know Behind the Scenes

Last year, Microsoft has released Windows 8 Developer Preview for public to try some of the new features from Windows 8 to be released soon enough in this year. March 1st, 2012 is the date of the new version of Windows 8 that has been released by Microsoft. It is now called Windows 8 Consumer Preview. This new version of Windows is the improved version of Windows 8 Developer Preview. Lots and lots of new applications have been installed and some of the applications are brought from the current version of Windows (Windows 7 @ Windows v6.1 build 7600). Here are the some of the new features from Windows 8 Consumer Preview (Windows v6.2 build 8250): 


Windows 8 Boot Screen
As you all can see, this is the simplest version of Windows boot screen, replacing the text version of Windows 8 Developer Preview.

Windows 8 Start Screen
The start screen of Windows 8 CP is the improved and stable version compared to Windows 8 Consumer Preview. The new thing of Windows 8 CP is that you can install some of the application that has been built by Microsoft Developer. You can install it from Microsoft Store, or you can click the Store application to browse some of the applications that come with it.

List of pre-installed Windows 8 CP Metro Applications

Microsoft Store | Windows Store is the new applications for users to download and install the Metro applications. Some of it is free to use and some of it are trial version. You have to buy it for full version of some metro applications. You also can update the installed version of metro application here.

Xbox LIVE Games | Xbox LIVE Games is one of the applications for adults to play online and share their game performance ranking for any users in Windows Live. You can obtain and play games for free or trial.

Map | Windows Map is one of the powerful tools for users to navigate them anywhere without using any GPS system. It is provided by Bing Maps. Using the wireless device, you can locate, drive and you can let your PC as your GPS system.

Messaging | Windows 8 CP comes with the all new Windows Messaging. You can even chat with your friends via online or you can connect your own Facebook to chat without opening your own browser.

Mail | With the new Windows 8 CP, you can check your inbox via Windows Mail. From there, you can connect your account via Windows Live Messenger, Google, and Exchange account. You can also check your mail in offline mode to see your previous mail in your computer.

People | Windows 8 CP comes with Windows People. Just like Windows Live Messenger, Windows People can be used to see the updated status from your friends either from Windows Live of Facebook. Clicking their picture and names will redirect to Windows Messaging for you to chat. If you want to return to Windows People, just press Win+Tab or Alt+Tab.

Weather | Windows 8 CP comes with weather system for users to check their daily or hourly weather from Bing Weather Forecast. Users can also check the tomorrow’s weather status.

Windows 8 Desktop


If you haven’t realized, there is no Windows Start Orb. Where could it be? Just hover your mouse to the end of bottom left corner and you will see the tiny tile called “Start” for users to access the start page. Users can also press the Win button on their keypad or hover the mouse to the end top or bottom right corner to activate the Windows charm.

Metro Control Panel
Have you realized again that there is no Metro Control Panel button at the Windows Start Screen? Where could it be to access it? Simple. Hover the mouse to the end top or bottom right corner or press the Win+C to activate the Windows Charm, and click Settings. At the bottom of the screen, you will see “More PC settings”. That is Metro Control Panel access button. You can personalize your own PC with your own taste.
